ABOUT
Principals Joby Blackman (Landscape Designer) and Carolyn Blackman (Horticulturalist) formed Vivid Design in 1996. The combined influence ensures gardens have equal emphasis on hard landscape design and planting design. Vivid design has been awarded multiple medals for design both in Australia and Internationally.
"Our approach to landscape design is always contextual - the people, the architecture and surrounding environment being the major influential factors in the finished design. Our philosophy is that the gardens we design should be unique and devoid of authorship. The subtle weaving in of history, ‘stories’ or other more personal elements is also a particular design influence."
Vivid Design brings combined 40 years of landscape design experience, passion and horticultural expertise - focussing on the collaborative creation of individual designs; verdant spaces to enjoy life outdoors and that complement architecture for timeless results. Commissions range from small, inner city courtyards in capital cities, to rural properties in the Western Districts, Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas - with the majority being residential gardens in Melbourne. Commercial work includes specialised Show Garden design for local/International events. Masterplanning for Gated Communities, Schools, Cemeteries, and most recently Landscape Design and Horticultural Consultancy for the acclaimed Point Leo Sculpture Park.
At Vivid Design, we listen; a crucial element of the client/designer relationship and in direct correlation with the ultimate success and practicality of the garden. We don’t have a ‘look’ that we try and fit our clients into, creating a version of that style with each project. We are not slave to current trends. On the contrary, our goal is to make our garden designs look and feel as if they belong to our clients, and their home, not Vivid Design, nor a moment in time.
To that end, we really want to understand the individual needs, aesthetic and feeling our clients wish to create. In order to do that effectively, we listen carefully to their wants and needs, make suggestions based on years of experience and expertise and then develop a brief which we judge against practical constraints and it is that which maps the way forward to not just to a lovely set of drawings, but an achievable garden.
There is no one garden type, size or situation for Vivid Design; tiny courtyards, suburban blocks, rooftops, rural acreage, large shows and events are all embraced enthusiastically with an individual, considered design and as a result, forms a large, incredibly varied body of work.
