Major Axial Path (Palm Walk) at Williamstown botanic gardens

In 2007 Vivid design was commissioned to re-design the underplanting in the Palm walk.  A major part of the Council's brief was to utilise plants with low water requirements.  Our inspiration for the overall planting design was taken from the crossed lattice patterns from the remnants of fronds on the Washingtonia trunks.  The pattern has been interpreted and applied (junipers) in plan view and provides a consistent element and sense of rhythm down the entire walk. The spaces between the Juniper blocks are planted for foliage and seasonal interest. The Juniper blocks will be clipped to defined forms and are intended to cover up the inconsistent butts of the Washingtonia's over time.
